Sen. Go: Agro investment, food security key to Balik Probinsya success

Senator Bong Go stressed the importance of investing in agriculture and ensuring household food security to support the success of the "Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa Program" (BP2).

Go highlighted that strengthening the agricultural sector and promoting food security in provinces would create sustainable livelihood opportunities for urban poor families relocating to the countryside.

He urged the Department of Agriculture (DA) to focus on household food security programs, particularly for those returning to their provinces, to ensure their basic needs are met.

The senator suggested that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) consider allowing the DA to realign funds to support these food security initiatives.

Go also called for close coordination between local government units (LGUs) and the DA to implement localized food security programs aligned with national plans.

He emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of congested areas like Metro Manila, making the BP2 program and its focus on provincial development crucial.

The "Balik Probinsya" program aims to decongest Metro Manila and spread economic development nationwide by encouraging relocation to the provinces.

Go also noted the need for Filipinos to become more food self-reliant and reduce dependence on global food trade, especially after the pandemic disrupted global supply chains.
