Sara Duterte says no to tandem with father

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has clarified that a Duterte-Duterte tandem in the 2022 elections is unlikely, as she has informed her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, of her lack of intention to run for the country's top post.

Duterte-Carpio expressed her confusion regarding the exchange between Malacañang and the opposition coalition 1Sambayan about her potential electoral plans.

She recalled a conversation with President Duterte in January where she explicitly stated her non-intention to run for president, to which he responded positively, although she noted no discussion about gender occurred.

The President had previously advised his daughter against seeking the presidency, citing her gender as a reason.

This clarification comes in the context of President Duterte's own past actions, where he initially denied intentions to run for president in 2016 before eventually substituting a party mate to secure a spot on the ballot.
