Restored Lino Brocka film 'Jaguar' to open Sinag Maynila festival

Lino Brocka's neo-noir crime classic 'Jaguar,' meticulously restored in 4K, will open the 7th Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival on September 23 at Gateway Cineplex.

The film, originally released in 1979, was the first Filipino movie nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.

Inspired by a true crime account from Nick Joaquin's 'Reportage on Crime,' the screenplay was written by Jose F. Lacaba, Ricky Lee, and Brocka himself.

It tells the story of Poldo, a security guard entangled in crime while protecting a wealthy playboy, leading to a tragic downfall shaped by class conflict and moral choices.

The restored 'Jaguar' had its international premiere at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France, and its Asian premiere at Sinag Maynila.

The restoration was a collaborative effort between the Film Development Council of the Philippines' Philippine Film Archive (PFA) and France's Cité de Mémoire.

Sinag Maynila will also feature other restored films in its 'Pambansang Alagad ng Sining' section, including Eddie Garcia's 'Atsay'.
