Rep wants March declared Bawal Bastos Awareness Month

Akbayan party-list Representative Perci Cendaña has filed House Resolution 2247, seeking to declare March as "Bawal Bastos" Awareness Month in observance of Women's Month.

The resolution urges the Philippine Commission on Women to conduct a Compliance Audit of public and private establishments on whether they effectively abide by the Safe Spaces Act.

Proposed indicators for the audit include public awareness campaigns, anti-sexual harassment seminars, distribution of educational modules, and enforcement of Violation Against Women and Children desks.

Cendaña stated that disrespect towards women and other genders should no longer be common, emphasizing that "Bawal ang bastos sa kalye, sa opisina, sa social media, at lalo na sa gobyerno."

He added that the resolution aims to cultivate a culture of gender-sensitivity and safe spaces where respect is not seasonal.

Akbayan members distributed stickers and posters with hotlines for reporting gender-based harassment to drivers and commuters along Elliptical Road in Quezon City on March 4.
