Chua: PH must cooperate with ICC on Duterte warrant

Manila Rep. Joel Chua stated that the Philippines has a legal and diplomatic obligation to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) should an arrest warrant be issued against former President Rodrigo Duterte, despite the country's withdrawal from the Rome Statute.

However, legal expert Ferdinand Topacio argued that the Philippines is not bound to cooperate with the ICC's warrant.

Topacio explained that the ICC cannot unilaterally acquire jurisdiction over a former member state and that the Philippines, as a sovereign nation, is not obligated to cooperate with the ICC.

Presidential Communications Office Secretary Jay Ruiz previously stated that the government is prepared for any eventuality concerning reports of an ICC arrest warrant against Duterte.
