QCHD explains COVID-19 case surge due to database backlog

The Quezon City Health Department (QCHD) has clarified that the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the city is due to the delayed entry of both new and old cases into the Department of Health (DOH) database.

Dr. Rolly Cruz, head of QCHD's Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (ESU), assured residents that there is no cause for alarm, explaining that the backlog includes cases dating back to March 18.

The DOH database received entries as late as May 12, contributing to the overnight increase in reported figures.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte had previously ordered an investigation into the unusual spike from an average of 10-20 new cases daily to over 100.

The DOH is actively working to reconcile cases that are marked for Quezon City but lack specific addresses.

As of Thursday, the DOH reported a total of 1,717 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Quezon City, with 1,599 having complete addresses.

The QC-ESU and district health offices validated 1,417 cases, comprising 825 active/recovering patients and 446 recoveries.
