Water quality in Puerto Galera declines post oil spill

Water quality in Puerto Galera has declined based on four consecutive tests following the oil spill from the MT Princess Empress, Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito "Bonz" Dolor confirmed.

The deterioration in water quality was observed from Puerto Galera to Bulalacao, with the decline noted even before the Holy Week and Araw ng Kagitingan holidays.

Governor Dolor stated that he had informed the municipal mayor of Puerto Galera about the increasing oil levels.

He is currently awaiting recommendations from the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Health (DOH) regarding a potential fishing ban in the area.

Despite the governor's confirmation, Puerto Galera Mayor Rocky Ilagan insisted the area was not affected by the oil spill based on criteria from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

Mayor Ilagan expressed concern that a premature reaction from the local government could cause public fear, as it had not considered advice from the task force.
