PTFOMS raises alert level amid threats to journalists

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has raised its alert level due to a rise in threats and violence against journalists as the midterm elections approach.

PTFOMS is investigating an incident where La Paz, Abra Mayor Joseph Bernos allegedly threatened DZRH reporter Romeo Beñas via Facebook messenger and video call on April 21.

Bernos is currently running for Congress in the Lone District of Abra.

In a separate incident, unknown assailants fired upon the residence of Reynaldo Siason, former president of the Negros Press Club and a radio broadcaster, in Talisay City, Negros Occidental on April 20, although no injuries were reported.

The task force is coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for both cases.

PTFOMS Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. emphasized the seriousness of these threats to press freedom and urged all candidates to respect journalists' duties.
