DICT directed to boost cyber defenses vs online scams pre-Christmas

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to strengthen defenses against online financial scams before the Christmas season.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda stated the aspiration for Filipinos to feel at ease when using credit cards and online payment methods during the holiday season.

To combat these scams, the DICT is phasing out 2G and 3G networks as they are more prone to hacking and interference.

Mobile network companies Smart Communications, Globe Telecom and DITO Telecommunity have phased out their 3G network connectivity in September.

However, the complete shutdown of the 2G signal nationwide will take time as approximately 10 million Filipinos, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), still rely on 2G for basic communication.

The DICT is also collaborating with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, telecommunications providers, and social media platforms to address content moderation and combat fake news.
