Pope Francis has chosen the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, located outside the Vatican, as his final resting place, diverging from the tradition of burial in the Vatican grottoes.

This significant decision is reportedly linked to the Pope's profound devotion to the Virgin Mary, the namesake of the chosen basilica.

The Basilica of Saint Mary Major, also known as Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, is situated approximately six kilometers from Saint Peter's Basilica within the city of Rome, though it remains under the Holy See's authority.

Pope Francis has consistently visited this basilica during his trips to and from Rome, spending time before the revered icon of Salus Populi Romani.

This icon, a Byzantine depiction of Mary and the Child Jesus, is widely believed to be miraculous, and the Pope has made it a practice to offer flowers at its altar during his visits.
