Poll candidate, one other killed in Maguindanao clash

Two individuals, including a municipal council candidate, were killed and eight others were arrested during a clash with government forces in Pandag, Maguindanao del Sur.

The deceased poll candidate was identified as Emran Mamalinta, who was seeking a seat in the Sangguniang Bayan.

Those arrested were members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team and residents of Pandag town.

The confrontation occurred in four villages of Pandag at dawn Saturday when responding police and military forces were attacked, leading to a four-hour firefight.

Authorities assured voters that the elections would proceed as scheduled in Pandag, with police and military presence to ensure security.

A subsequent clearing operation resulted in the recovery of several firearms, including M16 rifles and an M203 rifle, along with ammunition and personal belongings.
