Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil launched the Joint Anti-Kidnapping Action Committee (JAKAC) to combat kidnapping in the Philippines.
The JAKAC aims to identify, investigate, and neutralize organized kidnap-for-hire operations.
The committee comprises various government agencies including the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Justice (DOJ), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC).
It also includes the Bureau of Immigration (BI), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), and other specialized units.
Private sector organizations such as the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc., Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, and the Makati Business Club are also part of the committee.
Media organizations will also participate in the JAKAC.
Marbil emphasized that the JAKAC signifies a commitment to courage, collaboration, and public safety.
Challenges such as slow CCTV footage review and difficulties in tracking cryptocurrency ransom payments were acknowledged by Marbil.
Lt. Gen. Edgar Allan Okubo has been appointed by Marbil to lead the newly formed joint action committee.
