PNP investigates teen's death during anti-illegal cockfighting ops

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is investigating the death of 18-year-old Edwin Arnigo, who was allegedly shot during an anti-illegal cockfighting operation in Valenzuela City on Sunday noon.

The operation began when police responded to complaints of an ongoing illegal cockfighting activity, also known as 'tupada'.

During the operation, three suspects were apprehended, and several items, including fighting cocks and PHP1,340 in bet money, were confiscated.

According to PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, one of the suspects grabbed a policeman's firearm, leading to a scuffle where the gun reportedly went off, hitting Arnigo.

Arnigo was declared dead on arrival at the Valenzuela Medical Center.

The involved police officer has been placed under restrictive custody and disarmed as part of the PNP's own internal investigation.

The PNP has vowed to cooperate with a separate, independent investigation into the incident to be conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) at the request of the victim's family and the city mayor.
