Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil has asked former PNP chiefs to clarify their roles during former President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs.
This comes after retired police official Royina Garma alleged a payment and rewards system for killing drug suspects, sanctioned by Duterte and high-ranking officials.
Garma claimed that Duterte asked her to implement the Davao model of the war on drugs on a national scale, with rewards up to P1 million for killing suspects.
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go and former National Police Commission commissioner Edilberto Leonardo were also implicated by Garma.
Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, Duterte's first PNP chief, denied Garma's allegation of a "rewards system", stating he had no funds for such a system and believed it was a sworn duty of every policeman to keep their area of responsibility free from drugs.
Former PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar also stated he did not receive any order regarding the reward system.
Marbil stated that the PNP takes these allegations seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and transparency.
He emphasized that the investigation is vital for restoring public trust as the PNP recalibrates its anti-drug campaign with a focus on human rights.
