Piston stages nationwide strike highlighting corruption's impact on jeepney drivers

Transport group Piston launched a one-day nationwide strike on Thursday to highlight the struggles faced by jeepney drivers, particularly the impact of corruption on their livelihood.

Piston president Mody Floranda stated that around 100,000 drivers participated in the strike to express their anger and call the government's attention to their daily hardships.

Floranda emphasized that a significant portion of daily earnings, approximately P390, goes to excise tax, money that could otherwise support drivers' families.

He also pointed out that flooding, exacerbated by heavy rains, further impacts their ability to work and incurs repair costs when their jeepneys are damaged.

The Lawyers for Commuters Safety and Protection (LCSP) reminded the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) that the strike's main purpose is to unite against corruption, not just minimal impact on transport.

LCSP founder Atty. Ariel Inton stated that the transport sector is affected by anomalous flood control projects and that the strike's impact is secondary to the primary goal of stopping corruption.
