Phivolcs warns public away from Taal Volcano Island

Phivolcs has warned the public to stay away from Taal Volcano Island, particularly the Main Crater, due to the imminent threat of a dangerous explosive eruption and hazardous volcanic gases.

The warning was issued after a viral video surfaced showing an individual touring the high-risk Taal Volcano Island, raising concerns that others might follow suit.

Phivolcs stated that even areas like the Daang Kastila trail are dangerous due to a fissure that has formed an explosion pit, and the ground there is hot.

Volcanic gases, including sulfur and odorless carbon dioxide, are being emitted, posing health risks such as poisoning and asphyxiation.

Phivolcs maintains Alert Level 4 for Taal Volcano, indicating a possible hazardous explosive eruption within hours to days.

A total evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and areas within a 14-kilometer radius is strongly recommended as the island is considered a permanent danger zone.

Mandatory evacuations and lockdowns have been enforced by the Provincial Government of Batangas in several identified high-risk towns and cities surrounding the volcano.
