Phivolcs warns of Mayon phreatic eruption due to increased seismic activity

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported an increase in seismic activity at Mayon Volcano, warning of a potential phreatic eruption.

Increased seismicity and long-term swelling of the edifice suggest a deep magma intrusion may be taking place, increasing the chances of steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Phivolcs recorded 26 volcanic earthquakes since 12 a.m. on Saturday at depths of 5-10 kilometers and noted 609 tons per day of sulfur dioxide emissions on September 3rd.

The volcano has been exhibiting non-uniform inflation in its northeastern sector since October 2024 and in its south to southwestern sectors since March 2025.

The public is advised to refrain from entering the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone due to possible rockfall, landslides, and short pyroclastic density currents.

Mayon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 1.
