Phivolcs modernization bill gets bicam nod

The bicameral conference committee has unanimously adopted a reconciled version of Senate Bill 2828 and House Bill 10730, which aims to modernize the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

This modernization effort will enhance Phivolcs' technological and operational capabilities to better mitigate disasters caused by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and other geotectonic phenomena.

Key improvements include significant upgrades to equipment, an increase in seismic stations, enhanced funding, and better compensation for Phivolcs personnel.

Albay Representative Joey Salceda emphasized the crucial role of Phivolcs in disaster risk reduction, particularly for provinces like Albay which are frequently affected by active volcanoes such as Mayon Volcano.
