Phivolcs notes increased seismic activity at Bulusan Volcano

Phivolcs has reported an increase in seismic activity at Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon, with 94 volcanic earthquakes recorded since April 12, 2024.

The majority of these earthquakes were weak and shallow volcanic-tectonic in nature, with a smaller number being low frequency volcanic earthquakes.

This elevated seismic activity may be attributed to hydrothermal activity, potentially causing short-term pressurization within the volcano.

Despite the increased activity, Alert Level 0 (Normal) remains in effect, though Phivolcs warns of potential sudden steam-driven eruptions.

The public and local government units are reminded to strictly prohibit entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around the volcano due to the risk of sudden volcanic hazards.
