PH, UAE to sign first Middle East FTA in January

The Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are scheduled to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between January 11 and 14 in the UAE.

This CEPA will be the Philippines' first free-trade agreement (FTA) with a Middle Eastern nation.

Trade Secretary Cristina Roque will accompany President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and Finance Secretary Frederick Go for the signing.

The agreement aims to expand bilateral trade and investment opportunities, covering Philippine products of interest such as bananas, pineapples, electronics, and machinery.

The UAE was the Philippines' 18th largest trading partner in the previous year, with bilateral trade reaching $1.83 billion.

Philippine exports to the UAE in 2024 amounted to $390.40 million, while imports were $1.44 billion.
