PH to import less than 4M MT rice in 2026

The Philippines anticipates importing less than four million metric tons of rice in 2026, with import volumes projected between 3.6 and 3.8 million metric tons.

This move comes as the country prepares to resume rice importation in January after a four-month ban aimed at stabilizing local farm-gate prices.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) forecasts a palay production of approximately 20.3 million metric tons in 2026, similar to this year's target.

The projected import volume is deemed sufficient to meet national demand while protecting the prices received by farmers.

The DA and rice importers have agreed to better calibrate import volumes to maintain affordable consumer prices and fair farmer prices.

Additionally, the tariff rate on rice imports will be increased to 20% from the current 15% as importation resumes.
