PH recalls VFA abrogation with US

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. announced that the Philippines is recalling the abrogation of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States.

The decision was made on instructions from President Duterte after the US addressed concerns regarding the security relationship in "good faith".

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III, who was in the country for a visit, received the diplomatic note for the VFA recall.

Locsin stated that the US has demonstrated its commitment to its alliance obligations with the Philippines.

The DFA chief emphasized that the alliance has remained strong and has overcome challenges since the abrogation notice was issued in February 2020.

He also highlighted the importance of a strong US presence for maintaining peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
