PH Navy eyes more anti-submarine assets
The Philippine Navy detected a Russian attack submarine, the "Ufa 490", operating within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) without prior notice.
This was the first time a submarine had been detected in the Philippine EEZ, causing initial alarm for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
The Philippine Navy's BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) monitored the submarine after it was sighted on November 28, 80 nautical miles west of Cape Calavite, Occidental Mindoro.
The Russian crew stated they were heading back to their naval base in Vladivostok after an exercise with the Royal Malaysian Navy and were waiting for weather to improve before departing.
The submarine left Philippine waters on Monday, exiting via the northern part of the country.
Following this incident, the Philippine Navy is seeking to acquire additional anti-submarine assets, including warships like frigates or corvettes.
