PGH COVID-19 admissions surge sixfold in 10 days

The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has seen a significant surge in COVID-19 admissions, with cases increasing sixfold in just 10 days.

On December 25, PGH had 30 COVID-19 patients, but by January 5, this number had risen to 203.

PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario noted that many health workers are also falling ill, likely from community transmission after the holidays.

This spike in cases coincides with the Philippines recording Omicron variant cases, including local transmissions, and a national daily tally nearing 11,000 new infections.

While the Omicron variant is considered highly transmissible, the World Health Organization has indicated it may cause milder symptoms by affecting the upper respiratory tract.
