Petecio, Marcial begin Paris Olympics campaigns

Olympic medalists Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial begin their Paris 2024 Olympic campaigns on Tuesday.

Petecio, a silver medalist from Tokyo, will compete against India's Jaismine Lamboria in the women's 57kg category, expressing her determination to win gold with the statement, "Walang hinto, hangga't walang ginto (No stopping until I win gold)."

Should Petecio beat her Indian rival, she will have to clear a high hurdle as she goes up against No. 3 seed and Frenchwoman Armina Zidani to advance to the quarterfinals.

Marcial, a bronze medalist from Tokyo, received a bye and will face Turabek Khabibullaev of Uzbekistan in the Round of 16.

Marcial's potential path to the finals includes a quarterfinals clash with reigning Olympic champion Arlen Lopez of Cuba.

He may also face top seed Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan of China, who defeated him at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, and Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine, who narrowly edged him out in Tokyo.
