The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that a Chinese Coast Guard vessel hindered its mission to recover the body of a Filipino fisherman who had passed away at sea.
The PCG responded to a distress call from a Filipino fishing boat located 70 nautical miles southwest of Silanguin Island, Zambales.
The deceased fisherman was identified as 58-year-old Elpidio Lamban, a resident of Subic, Zambales.
Upon arrival, PCG medical personnel found that the fisherman had already died and attempted to transport his body back to Subic.
The Chinese Coast Guard vessel CCG-3304 allegedly engaged in shadowing, obstructing the PCG's efforts to retrieve the deceased fisherman's body using the BRP Cabra's crane amidst heavy waves.
The PCG stated that the BRP Teresa Magbanua is en route to take over patrolling responsibilities in the area to address the presence of Chinese vessels.
The Chinese Embassy in Manila has yet to provide a statement regarding the incident.
