The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is monitoring a Chinese research vessel, the Zhong Shan Da Xue, operating within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) near Batanes.
PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela stated that the vessel has been in the Philippine EEZ since April 2, exhibiting navigational patterns suggestive of maritime scientific research.
The Zhong Shan Da Xue, a 114-meter-long vessel with a tonnage of 2,300, departed China on March 31.
As of Monday morning, the vessel was located approximately 103.86 nautical miles from Itbayat, Batanes.
The PCG suspects the vessel is surveying the northern island close to Taiwan, and noted its unusual navigational route pattern.
Tarriela added that the Chinese government has no clearance or authority to conduct marine scientific research within the Philippine EEZ.
