PCG medevacs Chinese engineer with severed thumb

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) conducted a medical evacuation for a 35-year-old Chinese engineer from the Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier MV BBG Qinzhou, who accidentally cut off his left thumb.

The incident occurred while the vessel was at sea, approximately 20.69 nautical miles west of Semirara Port, Caluya, Antique, en route from Nansha, China, to Tanjung Bara, Indonesia.

The engineer stated that his injury was caused by a fan blade.

The PCG deployed its fast patrol boat BRP Kalanggaman (FPB-2404) to a rendezvous point off Nogas Island, Anini-y, Antique.

PCG medical personnel provided first aid to the injured seafarer onboard the patrol boat before transporting him to Muelle Loney Wharf in Iloilo City.

The seafarer was successfully evacuated around 6 p.m. and arrived at the wharf in Iloilo City at 8:30 p.m.

Upon arrival in Iloilo City, the seafarer was turned over to the ship's agent and taken to a hospital for further treatment.
