PCG collects 400 liters of oily water from MT Princess Empress spill

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) collected approximately 400 liters of oily water mixture during an offshore response to the oil spill from the sunken MT Princess Empress in Oriental Mindoro.

The tanker, which was carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel, sank off the province on February 28 after encountering engine trouble.

Cleanup operations, led by Malayan Towage and Salvage Corp., involved deploying oil spill booms and skimmers to manually collect oil sheens near Balingawan Point.

As of May 2, the PCG has cleaned more than 48.45 kilometers of shoreline out of a total of 57.77 kilometers affected since March 1.

A total of 5,963 sacks and 22 drums of oil-contaminated debris have been collected from affected areas in Naujan, Calapan City, and Pola.

The PCG stated that efforts to raise the sunken MT Princess Empress are not currently a priority, with the focus remaining on oil collection.

The use of coconut oil-based absorbent pads and imported fiber absorbent pads for continued cleanup is being considered.
