PBBM signs law digitizing Shari'ah courts, enhancing legal aid for Muslims

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12304 into law, which aims to improve access to Shari'ah courts for Filipino Muslims through digitalization and enhanced legal aid.

The new law, signed on September 18, modifies provisions of RA 9997, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Act of 2009.

It mandates the Department of Information and Communications Technology, in collaboration with the Supreme Court, to develop a digital system for court processes, allowing for paperless filing of documents while respecting privacy.

RA 12304 also requires the NCMF to aid the Philippine Statistics Authority in conducting a census of the Filipino Muslim population.

Additionally, the NCMF's Legal Affairs Bureau is tasked with providing legal education and assistance to Filipino Muslims involved in litigation.
