PBBM says PH must prepare for external threats amid Indo-Pacific tensions

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. stressed the need for the Philippines to prepare for external threats due to heightened geopolitical tension in the Indo-Pacific.

Marcos noted the country's proximity to Taiwan and the dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) as factors contributing to these threats.

The President made these remarks during a meeting with the Philippine Army's 5th Infantry Division (ID) at Camp Melchor dela Cruz in Gamu, Isabela.

He mentioned that the mission of the 5th ID now includes territorial defense against external threats.

Marcos reiterated that the Philippines is committed to defending its sovereign territory and exclusive economic zone, despite not seeking to claim territory.

Additionally, Marcos will not attend the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, with Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Carlito Galvez Jr. representing the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) clarified that expelled lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr. was released but subsequently rearrested.
