Palace: PH has no jurisdiction over Duterte's ICC proceedings

Malacañang has stated that the Philippines has no jurisdiction over any proceedings conducted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro emphasized that once a former president is brought before the ICC, the Philippine government relinquishes control and responsibility.

However, Castro pointed out that Republic Act 9851 obligates the Philippines to ensure fair legal proceedings for any Filipino facing trial overseas, including former President Duterte.

Republic Act 9851 aims to align Philippine law with international standards for prosecuting grave crimes of global concern.

Castro also clarified that any expenses related to Duterte's ICC hearing, such as legal counsel fees, would be privately shouldered by him.
