Construction for the Ortigas Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) has officially commenced in Pasig City, marking a significant step forward after a nearly two-year delay.
The delay in construction was attributed to right-of-way issues with property owners, which necessitated expropriation.
DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced that the entire MMSP will be under construction by November, with remaining segments to be awarded to contractors before year-end.
Megawide Construction Corp. is building the Ortigas station, which the DOTr expects to be finished in three years.
The P488.5-billion MMSP, co-funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is now set for completion by 2032.
The MMSP, once completed, will be the first underground subway station in the Philippines, spanning approximately 35 kilometers with 17 stations.
The railway is expected to service over 500,000 passengers every day from Valenzuela, Quezon City, Pasig, Taguig, Parañaque, and Pasay.
The subway line aims to cut the travel time from Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City from 70 minutes to 45 minutes.
