UP-MSI forecasts more oil spill to reach Calapan City

The University of the Philippines - Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) has forecasted that more oil spill is likely to reach Calapan City within the next three days.

The oil spill trajectory indicates a northward shift, with Calapan City potentially receiving the majority of the oil from March 20 to 22.

A satellite image from March 15 confirmed that the sunken vessel MT Princess Empress is still leaking oil.

The UP-MSI stated that more pronounced westward currents along the northern Mindoro coast towards the Verde Island Passage, coupled with variable 'Amihan' winds, are causing the oil to spread northward.

The agency emphasized that halting the oil seepage from the tanker, which sank on February 28, must be a priority to prevent further impact on critical biodiversity areas within the Verde Island Passage before the end of the amihan season.

The UP-MSI also urged for continuous coastal monitoring and encouraged the public to submit geotagged images of any observed oil slicks to aid in updating their oil spill models.
