OCTA Research calls for probe into new COVID-19 variant in Cebu

OCTA Research has urged an investigation into whether the new COVID-19 variant has reached Cebu province, as its replication rate has increased in January compared to December.

The OCTA team has identified Cebu province, including Cebu City, as a region of concern due to a continuous rise in COVID-19 cases, with cases doubling approximately every two weeks.

Infectious disease expert Dr. Benjamin Co noted that the number of cases in Cebu is worrisome because the replication rate in January compared to December has slightly risen.

Dr. Guido David warned that Cebu City's daily COVID-19 cases could reach 200 if the current pattern continues, projecting a doubling every two weeks.

David expressed concern that the healthcare system in Cebu may soon be overwhelmed.

He reminded the public that the coronavirus is still present, and this does not change how the pandemic should be addressed.
