Nueva Ecija gov't to buy palay from farmers at P15/kilo

The provincial government of Nueva Ecija will purchase fresh palay directly from local farmers at P15 per kilo, a price significantly higher than the current market rate of P8 to P10 per kilo.

Governor Aurelio Umali announced this initiative during a Provincial Food Council (PFC) meeting, which included mayors from various cities and municipalities.

The PFC approved resolutions to expand and disseminate guidelines for the Palay Price Support Program (PPSP), which will now cover palay and other agricultural products.

Additionally, the establishment of an Agri-Trading and Processing Center in Nueva Ecija was greenlit by the council.

The PFC, created in 2019, aims to protect farmers' livelihoods in Nueva Ecija, the Rice Granary of the Philippines, by addressing depressed palay prices attributed to the Rice Tariffication Law.

Previously, palay purchased through the PFC was milled into rice and distributed as food assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, a program that continues today.
