NGCP takes over troubled power line in Aklan
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has officially taken over the operation and maintenance of the Caticlan-Unidos 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line from Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) following an Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) order.
This takeover aims to allow NGCP to implement immediate, medium-term, and long-term solutions to enhance power reliability in Aklan and address frequent outages affecting Boracay Island.
The transmission line, formerly managed by AKELCO near Caticlan Airport, was damaged due to water wave splash and salt spray corrosion, leading to power interruptions.
NGCP is addressing the issues by constructing a new bypass line situated further from the seashore and has secured materials for a full reconductoring of the affected line, targeted for completion by March 2026.
The ERC reclassified the Caticlan-Unidos line as a transmission facility in November 2024, which will allow it to maintain its transmission function and be transferred to NGCP once the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138-kV line is completed.
