New coalition launched to combat fake news in PH

A new private sector initiative, the Digital Media Standards Coalition (DMSC), has been launched in the Philippines to combat online misinformation and disinformation.

The DMSC unites several key organizations, including the Blockchain Council of the Philippines, Creator and Influencer Council of the Philippines, Cybersecurity Council of the Philippines, Global AI Council of the Philippines, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the Kapisanan ng Social Media at Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.

DMSC chair Anton Mauricio stated that the body will recommend concrete steps to address fake news within the digital ecosystem.

Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman highlighted that lawmakers recognized the widespread proliferation of fake news, its dire implications on national security and the future generations, and the legal void concerning social media platforms.

The coalition aims to serve as a private sector sounding board for government efforts to prevent the spread of fake news, aligning with the Marcos administration's efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
