Negros Oriental declared under state of calamity after Kanlaon eruption

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) approved a resolution placing Negros Oriental under a state of calamity due to the adverse impact of the Kanlaon Volcano eruption.

This declaration allows the provincial government to utilize its Quick Response Fund (QRF) to aid evacuees.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) made the recommendation during its meeting on December 26, following a similar declaration by Vallehermoso on December 25.

Canlaon City, which has been under a state of calamity since the June 3 eruption, is accommodating 5,802 individuals or 1,778 families in 10 evacuation centers as of December 26.

An additional 643 families or 2,014 individuals are staying outside evacuation centers, bringing the total number of evacuees to 7,816 families.

The city government, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-7, will provide financial assistance of P3,000 to affected families within the four- to six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) who are staying outside evacuation centers.

Vulnerable sectors in evacuation centers will also receive P2,000 cash assistance.
