Negros Island faces risk of magnitude 8.2 earthquake from Negros Trench

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warns that Negros Island is also at risk from a powerful earthquake, dubbed the 'Big One,' similar to the threat faced by Metro Manila.

The Negros Trench, a significant geological feature, is capable of producing a magnitude 8.2 earthquake that could impact the entire Negros Island.

Such a powerful earthquake could potentially trigger a tsunami along the western coasts of Negros and Panay, with possible reach to Palawan and Zamboanga.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol advised residents near the sea to be aware of natural tsunami indicators and to immediately evacuate to higher ground rather than delaying.
