Navotas floodgate needs repair or replacement

A 30-year-old navigational gate in Navotas City requires comprehensive rehabilitation and potentially replacement, according to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan.

The gate's aging structure and driving arm mechanism are critical in controlling the water level of Navotas River.

Recent high tides and flooding in Barangay San Jose caused a river wall to collapse, damaging houses and leading to evacuations.

Navotas Representative Toby Tiangco is collaborating with DPWH-NCR, MMDA, and the local district engineering office to ensure repairs meet international welding and safety standards.

Tiangco has requested either a second gate or a new gate to replace the existing one, which is nearing 30 years in age.

While rehabilitation plans are underway, the DPWH is closely monitoring and maintaining the floodgate, which remains operational.
