MMDA collects over 600 tons of trash after TC Crising, habagat

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has collected over 600 tons of trash from pumping stations and flooded areas in Metro Manila following the effects of Tropical Cyclone Crising and the Southwest Monsoon.

A significant portion, 526.8 tons, was retrieved from pumping stations between Friday and Tuesday.

An additional 76.92 tons of garbage were removed from flooded areas during clearing operations from Monday to Tuesday.

Inspections at the Tripa de Gallina pumping station in Pasay City, the largest in Metro Manila, revealed heavy debris including furniture and appliances.

MMDA chief Romando Artes highlighted that plastics sucked into pumps can cause overheating and damage equipment, thus affecting the efficiency of pumping stations.

Artes also pointed out that Metro Manila's drainage system is over 50 years old and requires a master plan for upgrades, expansion, and the construction of new pumping stations.
