Mindanao businessman surrenders 25 firearms with expired licenses to PNP

A Mindanao-based businessman, Jesus P. Martinez, surrendered 25 firearms with expired licenses to the Philippine National Police (PNP) in an effort to encourage other community leaders to do the same and combat crime.

Martinez, who also heads the PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) advisory council, turned over the weapons and ammunition to Acting Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. at Camp Crame.

The surrendered items included various types of rifles, shotguns, submachine guns, three fragmentation grenades, and assorted ammunition.

Martinez stated that his surrender was in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 1745, which offers amnesty for simple illegal possession of weapons, ammunition, or explosives.

He clarified that as a gun collector with a Type 5 license under Republic Act No. 10591, he is permitted to own more than 15 firearms.

The PNP has intensified operations to account for hundreds of thousands of firearms with expired licenses, with Nartatez urging other gun owners to emulate Martinez.
