Meralco to spend 10x more on underground cabling project by 2030

Meralco is significantly expanding its underground cabling project to improve network resilience and remove unsightly overhead power and telecommunication lines in Metro Manila and surrounding areas.

The company aims to install 1,500 circuit kilometers of underground systems, prioritizing key locations such as financial districts, commercial centers, heritage sites, and tourist spots.

Special attention will also be given to areas prone to typhoons to enhance network resilience.

However, flood-prone areas present challenges due to the need for civil works coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways' flood-control projects.

The comprehensive underground cabling initiative is projected to be completed by 2030, pending necessary permits and right-of-way clearances.

Meralco anticipates a tenfold increase in investment for underground cabling compared to traditional overhead power lines.
