Meralco, Samsung C&T to explore nuclear energy feasibility in PH

Meralco has partnered with South Korea's Samsung C&T Corporation to explore the feasibility of nuclear energy in the Philippines.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by Meralco Executive Vice President Ronnie L. Aperocho and Samsung C&T President Jungwook Kim during The Philippines-Korea Business Forum in Manila.

This agreement was formalized during the state visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and aligns with the Philippine government's goal of enhancing long-term energy security.

Under the MOU, the two companies will collaborate on technical designs, regulatory frameworks, and the energy landscape necessary for nuclear development.

They plan to explore a pilot demonstration project and further opportunities for nuclear power plant construction.

Samsung C&T brings significant expertise in nuclear energy as an international construction firm, aiming to undertake large nuclear projects and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) initiatives in the Philippines.

Meralco Chairman Manuel Pangilinan stated this is a strategic effort to integrate nuclear energy into the country's power supply mix.
