Matalam grenade suspect killed in police operation

One of the two suspects involved in a New Year's Day grenade attack in Matalam, Cotabato, was killed during a police operation on Thursday evening.

The suspect, identified as Hammad Ansa, 40, resisted arrest and fired at law enforcers, leading to a shootout where he was killed.

A caliber 45 pistol was recovered from Ansa, who had a standing warrant for a previous murder case.

Witnesses at the grenade blast site identified Ansa as one of the perpetrators.

Authorities believe the grenade attack, which injured 22 people, was a retaliatory act by drug syndicates due to intensified anti-illegal drug operations in Matalam.

Barangay Kilada, where the suspect was killed, is considered a haven for drug syndicates operating in the town.
