Marikina police chief Col. Geoffrey Fernandez has been administratively relieved from his post pending an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a policewoman by two of her male colleagues.
Acting Philippine National Police chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez stated that Fernandez was relieved for command responsibility while the probe into the sexual offenses continues.
The suspects, a staff sergeant and a patrolman, allegedly molested the policewoman inside a police vehicle in Barangay Sto. Niño on August 17.
Eastern Police District director Brig. Gen. Aden Lagradante mentioned that other members of the unit, including the suspects' team leaders, chief supervisor, sector commander, and the Women and Children Protection Desk, are also under investigation.
The substation commander for the suspects has also been administratively relieved.
Lagradante indicated the investigation will look into possible deficiencies in unit management, such as reports of the complainant being alone, which may have enabled the assault.
The victim has returned to her police unit and is undergoing counseling.
