President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to inspect all dredgers operating in Manila Bay's reclamation projects.
The directive follows a report that a China-origin dredger, the Kang Ling 539, has been broadcasting multiple identities and flags while sailing through Philippine waters.
Maritime security analyst Ray Powell noted that the Kang Ling 539 has switched between six flag states and used different AIS identities.
The PCG has begun inspecting all 27 dredgers in the Manila Bay and Zambales area as part of this order.
PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab confirmed that the inspections and investigations are ongoing, and administrative sanctions will be imposed on any PCG personnel found to have allowed the vessel to sail despite detainable violations.
The PCG had previously apprehended the Kang Ling 539 for safety-related violations.
