QC, Manila declare state of calamity due to heavy rainfall

The Quezon City and Manila governments declared a state of calamity due to heavy rainfall and widespread flooding caused by the southwest monsoon and other weather systems.

In Manila, Mayor Isko Moreno declared a state of calamity, allowing the city government to access calamity funds for affected constituents.

Moreno ordered the city council to convene an emergency session to formalize the declaration.

Over 10,300 families are staying in 152 evacuation sites in 64 barangays in Quezon City, with most evacuees housed at Diosdado P. Macapagal Elementary School in Barangay Tatalon.

Both Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Moreno stated that the declaration would allow the city governments and barangays to utilize quick response and calamity funds for rehabilitation, cleanup efforts, and procurement of medicines.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned of over 200 millimeters of rainfall in Metro Manila until Wednesday afternoon.
