Malacañang hails WPS inclusion on Google Maps

Malacañang expressed elation over the inclusion of the West Philippine Sea (WPS) on Google Maps, viewing it as a significant recognition amid claims that it was merely an illusion.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro stated that the recognition is a delight for the entire country as it continues to protect and fight for the WPS.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) also welcomed the update, affirming it as a validation of the country's sovereign rights in the area.

The AFP considers the inclusion a valuable contribution to accurate information and public awareness regarding national sovereignty.

Google Maps now identifies the Scarborough or Panatag Shoal, located within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, as part of the West Philippine Sea.

Undersecretary Castro reiterated that the initiative reflects the WPS being accepted as part of the Philippines' sovereignty and jurisdiction, in accordance with UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award, strengthened by the Philippine Maritime Zones Act (RA 12064).
